EXPLANATION OF POSITION BY MR NATHANIEL KHNG, MINISTER-COUNSELLOR (LEGAL), PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE TO THE UNITED NATIONS, ON DRAFT RESOLUTION A/C.6/79/L.2/REV.1 UNDER AGENDA ITEM 80, ON CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY, SIXTH COMMITTEE, 22 NOVEMBER 2024

Mr Chair,

Singapore joined the consensus on draft resolution A/C.6/79/L.2/Rev.1, as amended, as we are of the firm view that crimes against humanity are among the most serious crimes of concern to the international community. We have also made clear our view that it is imperative that the international community works together to end impunity for perpetrators and provide justice for victims.

2 Singapore actively supported engagement, flexibility and compromise in finding a consensus-based outcome and wishes to express our deep appreciation to all similarly-minded colleagues who worked hard to try to preserve this Committee’s tradition of decision-making by consensus. These colleagues came from all regions and from delegations across the entire spectrum of positions on the ILC’s draft articles on prevention and punishment of crimes against humanity. They included the Chair of the Committee, the Chair’s adviser, and the Gambia and other co-sponsors of the draft resolution. Singapore thanks them for their efforts.

3 It is now incumbent on us to work to achieve a convention that will gain wide acceptance and implementation. Singapore is committed to engaging constructively in the process ahead, and we stand ready to work with all other States to achieve a good outcome.
